Tonsils are the small mass of mainly lymphoid tissue behind the tongue between the pillars of the faucis on either side of pharynx. Its inflammation is called tonsilities. In ayurveda it is known as tundekeri. It usually occurs in young children. It is often associated with attack of cold and cough. Constipation precipitates with attack of ailment.

Signs and symptoms:

The tonsils in the throat becomes red and swollen. The patient suffers from cough and pain in the throat. He experiences difficulty in swallowing the food. Even breathing at times becomes difficult. In children it is often associated with fever. The tongue remains coated.

Ayurveda Treatment for Tonsillitis:

The patient should be given hot fomentation externally on the front side of the neck and efforts should be made to keep it warm as long as possible. The bark of babbula (Acacia arabica) is very useful in the treatment of this condition. The decoction of this bark mixed with rock salt may be useful as a gargle. The powder of yastimadhu (Glycrrhiza glabra), vaca(Acoru calamus) and kulanjana(Alipina galangal) are also used in the treatment of this condition. These three powders are made into paste with honey and licked by the patients. This sooths the throat and cure inflammation.

Khadiradi vati is the drug of choice for Ayurveda Treatment For Tonsillitis. It is kept in the mouth and slowly sucked as it gets mixed up with saliva of mouth. In this way five to six tablets can be taken per day. The chief ingredient of this tablet is khadira( Acacia catechu).

Person suffering from chronic tonsillitis should be given Agastya Rasayan to be taken in a dose of one teaspoonful twice daily with honey. It should be given to the patient for about six months. Even if there is no tonsillitis, the patient should continue to take the medicine which produces immunity against the future attack of tonsillitis.

The patient can be  given the soup of pulses like mung(Phaselous mango) and kulattha (Dolichos biflorus). He should be given methi (Trigonella foenumgraecum), bitter gourd, patol(Trichosanthes dioca) and young radish. He should avoid dry, hard and heavy food, all sour things, curd, milk and sugarcane juice.

Other Regimens:

Sleep during day time and bath are prohibited. Care should be taken to keep the of the patient clear.
